AI's power problem is an energy renaissance in disguise

By · Published · Updated

TL;DR: Data centers used about 415 TWh of electricity in 2024, roughly 1.5% of global demand. The IEA's central case has them roughly doubling to about 950 TWh by 2030. Energy per AI task is falling fast, but total usage is growing faster.

Data centers are on track to double their electricity use by 2030. The IEA's numbers, and why they could pull grids into the future.

The IEA, not a lobby group or a startup, has produced the most careful public numbers on AI and electricity. They are big but not apocalyptic.

The numbers

The twist: efficiency

The IEA also says power consumption per AI task is falling quickly, at a pace it calls unprecedented in energy history. Total demand is still climbing because usage, including energy-hungry agents, is growing even faster. That's the Jevons paradox in real time.

Why that's optimistic

For decades, electricity demand in rich countries barely grew, and grid investment followed. Now buyers with huge budgets want firm, clean power fast. That pulls money into transmission, storage, nuclear restarts, new reactor designs and geothermal. Bottlenecks like transformers, grid interconnection queues and turbines are real, and the IEA flags them. But a real customer is exactly what infrastructure has been missing.

What's uncertain

The IEA's 2035 scenarios for data centers range from about 700 to 1,700 TWh. Anyone giving you one confident number is guessing.

FAQ

How much electricity do data centers use?

About 415 TWh in 2024, around 1.5% of global electricity consumption, per the IEA. The IEA estimates about 485 TWh in 2025.

Will AI double data center electricity use?

The IEA's central projection has data center consumption reaching about 950 TWh by 2030, roughly double 2025 levels, with AI-focused data centers roughly tripling.

Is AI getting more energy efficient?

Yes. The IEA says energy per AI task is falling rapidly, but rising usage is outpacing those gains.
